Jake Gyllenhaal reveals how being legally blind has been ?advantageous? to his acting career

Jake Gyllenhaal has shared insights into how his legal blindness has influenced his acting career positively.

The actor views his disability as “advantageous,” explaining, “I’ve never known anything else. When I can’t see in the morning, before I put on my glasses, it’s a place where I can be with myself,” he told the Hollywood Reporter in an interview published on Wednesday, June 5.

During a crucial scene in the 2015 film “Southpaw,” the 43-year-old Oscar nominee relied on this perspective. He revealed that when his character is informed by the police about his wife’s death, he performed the scene without his contacts to enhance his ability to listen.

This isn’t the first instance where the “Spider-Man: Far From Home” star has discussed his vision challenges. In a 2017 interview with the Telegraph, he recalled being a target for bullies in his childhood due to his corrective glasses.

“I was always a sensitive kid,” he remarked about the teasing, which sometimes led to childhood altercations. However, he noted that these experiences seemed to have contributed positively to his ability to portray fight scenes on screen.
