Today, the trial commences for Lucy Letby, a former neonatal nurse accused of attempting to murder a baby girl at the Countess of Chester Hospital. Last year, Letby, 34, from Hereford, was convicted of the murders of seven babies and the attempted murders of six others at the hospital between June 2015 and June 2016.
Although the jury was unable to reach verdicts on six counts of attempted murder related to five children during Letby’s 10-month trial at Manchester Crown Court, she will now be retried over one of those counts—allegedly attempting to murder a baby girl, identified as Child K, in February 2016. Letby’s request to appeal her convictions was denied by three senior judges last month.
Despite her legal team’s efforts to challenge the guilty verdicts based on four grounds, the Court of Appeal rejected her application on May 24.
