Meta lifts restriction on Donald Trump

Meta has removed restrictions on Donald Trump’s Facebook and Instagram accounts, a move that comes shortly after Trump publicly criticized Mark Zuckerberg online.

Announced on Friday, July 12, Meta stated that all limitations on Trump’s official Facebook and Instagram pages have been lifted as he prepares for potential GOP nomination at the upcoming Republican National Convention in Milwaukee.

Trump was originally banned from Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter in 2021 following the Capitol insurrection. While Meta reinstated his accounts last year, they had retained the ability to monitor for any violations that could result in further suspension.

The decision to fully remove these restrictions follows Trump’s recent remarks on Truth Social, a platform he launched after being banned from mainstream social media. In a post, Trump warned, “If I’m elected President, we will pursue Election Fraudsters at levels never seen before.” He also singled out Zuckerberg with the comment, “ZUCKERBUCKS, be careful!”

It remains unclear if Trump’s comments influenced Meta’s decision. Meta has emphasized that both Trump and President Biden will be held to the same standards as other users, including policies against hate speech and incitement to violence.

The future activity of Trump on Facebook and Instagram, compared to his focus on Truth Social, remains to be seen.
