FIFA is investigating a video featuring members of the Argentina national team engaging in racist behavior

FIFA has initiated an inquiry into a viral video on social media purportedly depicting members of the Argentina national team singing a song with racist and discriminatory lyrics aimed at French players.

The French Football Federation (FFF) has condemned the video and announced intentions to lodge a formal complaint with FIFA.

A spokesperson from FIFA acknowledged awareness of the circulating video and stated, “FIFA strongly denounces any form of discrimination, whether by players, fans, or officials.”

The controversy erupted following comments by Chelsea defender Wesley Fofana, who described the video—originally posted by his club teammate Enzo Fernandez—as “blatant racism.” Fernandez subsequently issued an apology on social media, attributing his actions to the excitement of the team’s celebrations and acknowledging the offensive nature of the lyrics. “There can be no justification for these words,” Fernandez emphasized.

Chelsea Football Club also responded with a statement underscoring its commitment to diversity and inclusivity, reaffirming its stance against all forms of discriminatory behavior.

This incident adds to a concerning trend of racial abuse targeting French national team players of African descent, notably including striker Kylian Mbappe, following their defeat to Argentina in the 2022 World Cup final.

Moreover, it has overshadowed Argentina’s recent triumph in securing a historic 16th Copa America title with a 1-0 victory over Colombia in Miami Gardens.
