South African man found guilty of killing his 5-year-old son amid paternity dispute with the child

A father has been found guilty by the South Gauteng High Court in Johannesburg, South Africa, for the murder of his 5-year-old son following a dispute with the child’s mother over paternity. Ronald Ngobeni, 29, was convicted for the killing of Khayone Rivoningo Capu in Tembisa on October 7, 2022.

According to National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) spokesperson Phindi Mjonondwane, Ngobeni had visited Ivory Park where the child lived with his mother and grandparents. Initially, he had asked the grandparents to take the boy to the mall with him under the pretense of buying clothes and returning him later.

Instead, Ngobeni committed a heinous act, brutally ending his son’s life and burying him in a shallow grave. The incident came to light after the grandparents reported the child missing, prompting a police investigation. Ngobeni initially misled investigators with a fabricated story about leaving the child with a vendor, which was refuted by the vendor.

The child’s decomposed body was eventually discovered on October 16 in a shallow grave under a bridge, showing signs of a fatal head injury.

During the court proceedings, Ngobeni declined to disclose how he had killed his son but testified that his actions stemmed from anger towards the child’s mother and grandmother, who had insulted him and questioned the child’s paternity. He claimed that ongoing disputes over paternity had escalated, with suggestions made to him that killing the child would resolve his issues.

The case has been adjourned until July 15 for arguments related to mitigation and aggravation.
