A Tottenham Hotspur player commented on being left out of Euro 2024, expressing feelings of powerlessness

Tottenham Hotspur right-back Pedro Porro has expressed his sense of helplessness after being excluded from the Spain squad for Euro 2024, despite having a strong season under Ange Postecoglou. The right-back position is not one where Spain has abundant options.

Porro initially earned a call-up to Luis de la Fuente’s Spain squad, having been familiar with him from youth ranks. However, after struggling in a match against Scotland, he only featured once in a friendly against Colombia. Despite his youth and speed, de la Fuente opted for experience, selecting 38-year-old Jesus Navas over Porro, who felt disappointed but accepted the decision.

“It’s a bit disempowering because you work all year to be there, but everyone has their opinion, which I respect, and that’s football. Every player wants to participate in an international tournament and represent their country… but that’s how it goes. I’ll keep working. That’s what I’ve been taught and that’s what I’ll continue to do,” he told Cadena SER.

Despite missing out, Porro harbors no bitterness towards his international teammates for their success.

“I’m very happy for them. I have a good relationship with everyone. It’s a great group, very positive. I’m especially happy for Fabian because we share the same physio and we share things… I haven’t spoken much with him or the others. I’m on vacation while they are competing, so I don’t want to disturb them. I’ll catch up with them later.”

With Dani Carvajal in his thirties and Navas likely in his final tournament, Porro sees an opportunity to establish himself in the right-back position in the coming years. This Euros may have come a bit early for Porro, but he remains optimistic about his future prospects.
