Benjamin Mendy called was called ‘a rapist’ and got abused by the French football fans

The 29-year-old joined his new club in his home country at the beginning of last season, marking a return to football after a two-year absence following legal proceedings against him, which began in August 2021.

The player’s subsequent trial led to Mendy being accused of eight counts of rape, one count of attempted rape, and one count of sexual assault. He denied all charges, maintaining his innocence throughout the proceedings.

Mendy was acquitted of six charges of rape and sexual assault in January 2023, and later cleared of an additional charge of rape and one of attempted rape in July 2023. Following his acquittal, he was released from his former club when his contract expired in June, and subsequently announced his transfer to the French club just five days after the end of his legal proceedings.
