Breaking News: Chi Chi Nworah Emerges Victorious in ‘Shanty Town’ Ownership Dispute Against Ini Edo

In a significant legal victory, Chineye “Chi Chi” Nworah, a filmmaker and owner of GCM Giant Creative Media Limited, has successfully defended her ownership rights to the Netflix original series “Shanty Town” against popular Nollywood actress Ini Edo and her production company Minnie Empire Productions Limited (MEP).

The Nigerian Trademark Registry and the Nigerian Copyright Commission (NCC) have ruled in favor of Nworah, dismissing Ini Edo’s claims to the trademarks and copyrights associated with “Shanty Town”. This decision follows a series of legal battles initiated by Ini Edo and MEP, who attempted to claim ownership of the trademarks “Scar” and “Shanty Town”, as well as the copyrights for the literary and audiovisual works “Shanty Town”.

On January 10, 2024, the Trademark Registry rejected Ini Edo and MEP’s petition regarding the trademarks, declaring it baseless and without merit, and confirming Nworah’s exclusive ownership of these trademarks. Similarly, on July 24, 2024, the NCC dismissed a petition by Ini Edo and MEP concerning the cancellation of two copyright certificates issued to Chinenye Nworah for the literary and audiovisual works “Shanty Town”.

The NCC found no legal grounds for the cancellation and upheld the validity of the certificates, confirming Mrs. Nworah’s rightful ownership of these copyrights. The legal team at Olisa Agbakoba Legal played a crucial role in securing these victories for Chinenye Nworah and GCM Giant Creative Media Limited.

This case highlights the importance of protecting creative works and ensuring fair compensation for artists. The ruling of the Trademark Registry and the decision of the NCC solidify Mrs. Chinenye Nworah’s ownership of intellectual property in relation to the Netflix series “Shanty Town”. The successful defense of these claims demonstrates the commitment of Olisa Agbakoba Legal to protecting the rights of creative individuals and companies in the face of intellectual property disputes.
