George Clooney has urged President Biden to withdraw from the race, arguing that he cannot secure victory in November

George Clooney asks President Biden to drop out, says he can

George Clooney has publicly called for President Joe Biden to step down from the 2024 election, asserting that Biden cannot prevail against Donald Trump.

In a New York Times op-ed, Clooney disclosed his recent interaction with Biden at a Democratic fundraiser in Los Angeles, noting a noticeable change in Biden’s demeanor compared to past years. “The Joe Biden I spent time with three weeks ago wasn’t the ‘big F-ing deal’ Biden of 2010, nor even the Biden of 2020. He was the same figure we saw during the debate,” Clooney wrote.

Speaking directly to fellow Democrats, Clooney expressed concern over overlooking warning signs due to fear of a second Trump term, particularly highlighted by Biden’s recent interview with George Stephanopoulos. Despite his admiration for Biden as a friend and a hero of democracy, Clooney emphasized that Biden’s age presents an insurmountable challenge for the upcoming election. “The one battle he cannot win is the fight against time. None of us can. We will not succeed in November with this president,” he asserted.

Encouraging a shift in focus towards alternative candidates, Clooney suggested considering figures such as Vice President Kamala Harris and several governors as the party prepares for its convention in Chicago next month.

He concluded his op-ed by acknowledging Biden’s past accomplishments and expressing hope for a new leader in 2024: “Joe Biden is a hero; he saved democracy in 2020. We need him to do it again in 2024.”
