Remi Tinubu clarifies statement about nudity was not directed at Meghan Markle

Remi Tinubu, the First Lady of Nigeria, has clarified her statement following a recent speech about nudity, which was mistakenly interpreted as criticism aimed at Meghan Markle’s attire during her visit to the country.

During an event commemorating the first year of her husband, Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s, presidency, Remi Tinubu urged Nigerian youths to refrain from indecency and nudity, stating, “We are not having the Met Gala… We don’t accept nakedness in our culture.”

She emphasized the importance of cultural values and expressed concern that some individuals were imitating American film stars without understanding their own heritage. However, her remarks were not specifically directed at Meghan Markle.

Despite this, foreign media outlets misinterpreted Remi Tinubu’s speech as targeting Meghan Markle, the Duchess of Sussex.

In response, the First Lady’s office clarified that her mention of the Duchess of Sussex pertained to Meghan’s exploration of her heritage and origins, particularly after learning about her Nigerian ancestry.

“The First Lady intended to highlight Meghan’s appreciation for our culture and people by visiting,” the statement to AFP Fact Check from the First Lady’s office read.

“It’s important to note that she made no comments regarding Meghan’s attire.”
