Rudy Giuliani, former lawyer for Donald Trump, has been disbarred in New York due to his involvement in claims of fraud during the 2020 election

Rudy Giuliani, once revered as the former mayor of New York City and a respected prosecutor, has been disbarred in New York following findings that he repeatedly made false statements about the 2020 election. The decision, issued by the New York Appellate Court on Tuesday, marks a significant fall from grace for Giuliani, who gained renown for his leadership during the aftermath of the 9/11 attacks and as the U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of New York.

The 31-page ruling states, “Giuliani is disbarred from practicing law, effective immediately, and his name is to be removed from the roll of attorneys and counselors-at-law in the State of New York.” The disciplinary charges stem from allegations that Giuliani knowingly communicated false and misleading statements regarding voter fraud, in his capacity as legal counsel for former President Donald J. Trump and the Trump campaign, following their unsuccessful bid for re-election in 2020.

Giuliani’s law license in New York had been previously suspended in June 2021 after authorities determined his claims about election fraud constituted a serious violation. This latest ruling solidifies his disbarment and represents a stark decline for Giuliani, who has faced broader repercussions compared to his client, Donald Trump, in their efforts to challenge the 2020 election results.

In addition to New York, Giuliani faces potential disbarment in Washington, where the D.C. Bar’s Board of Professional Responsibility has recommended similar action. Earlier this year, Giuliani was suspended by WABC radio and had his show cancelled due to ongoing false statements related to the election, which posed legal risks for the station.
