Police arrest two suspects for ATM card swapping in Niger state, recover 42 cards

The Niger State Police Command operatives caught two suspects for ATM card swapping and found 42 cards in Bida. SP Wasiu Abiodun, the command’s spokesperson, shared this information on Monday, May 20, 2024. The suspects admitted that most of the cards they had were expired.

The suspects explained that they would offer to help customers at ATM points, swapping the victims’ cards with expired ones before withdrawing money from their accounts.

“On 18/5/2024 at about 1300hrs, Police operatives attached to A Div Bida arrested two suspects, namely; -Philip Adefemi 46yrs and Joseph Micheal 42yrs, both of Masaka area of Nasarawa State,” the statement mentioned.

An incident of ATM card swapping was reported at A Div Bida, where a victim tried to withdraw money at a bank in Bida but could not. Another person at the ATM gallery offered to help, unknowingly swapping the victim’s card. Shortly after, the victim received a debit alert of #400,000.

Upon receiving the complaint, Police operatives acted swiftly, arresting the suspects, while one individual named Bala managed to escape.

During the initial investigation, forty-two ATM cards were seized from the suspects, including the victim’s card, along with a Mercedes-Benz C230 with Reg. No Abuja KUJ 44 NT.

The suspects claimed they were traveling from Abuja to Offa, Kwara State for a burial and decided to stay in Bida overnight. The next morning, they attempted to target more victims at ATMs.
