Two individuals, including a lawyer, were killed by gunmen in a community in Anambra

Gunmen have fatally shot Barrister Peter Awa, the Secretary General of Okija Progressive Union, along with Izuchukwu Igwenagha in the Okija community of Anambra State’s Ihiala Local Government Area.

The incident occurred at approximately 9pm on Sunday, May 19, 2024. Barrister Awa, who held positions as the Vice Chairman of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), Ihiala Branch, and the Director of Public Prosecution in Anambra State, was killed in a market square in Umudioka village. Izuchukwu Igwenagha, also known as Onwa, was murdered in Isieke village. Additionally, an unidentified businessman was abducted by the gunmen at Nkwo Okija while returning home from an event. Prior to the attack, Okija was considered one of the most secure communities in

Anambra due to its security measures. The community’s security was so reliable that neighboring areas often held burials and weddings there. The Okija Secretary was elected in 2023, through a town union election overseen by the Anambra Ministry of Local Government, Chieftaincy, and Town Union Matters. There was also an unsuccessful attempt to abduct his wife, a lawyer, in Ihiala.
