Update: A Somali refugee has been sentenced to life imprisonment for the “honour killing” of his seven-months-pregnant girlfriend.

Saga Forsgren Elneborg, aged 20, was discovered strangled to death at her residence in Örebro in April 2023, a case that deeply shocked Sweden.

Prosecutors alleged that Mohamedamin Abdirisek Ibrahim, her 22-year-old boyfriend, chose to murder her rather than face the perceived shame of revealing to his Muslim family that his girlfriend, who was believed to be of mixed Thai and Swedish descent and a Christian, was pregnant with his child.

According to the prosecution, on the evening Ibrahim intended to inform his family about Saga’s pregnancy, he visited her apartment in Örebro and strangled her using the cord of her lamp.

Initially, Ibrahim attempted to attribute Saga’s death to a gang-related incident, claiming that criminals had broken into the apartment and killed her to steal money he had hidden there.

However, following court proceedings, the judge and jury at the Örebro district court sided with the prosecutors, announcing Ibrahim’s life imprisonment sentence earlier today.

Additionally, it emerged during the trial that Ibrahim had engaged with other women throughout his relationship with Saga and had largely avoided accepting any responsibilities associated with impending fatherhood.
