Woman mayor assassinated in Mexico shortly after election of country’s first female president

Yolanda Sánchez Figueroa, the mayor of Cotija in Michoacán state, was killed following the election of Mexico’s first female president.

Her murder occurred shortly after the historic election of the country’s first female president, a race marked by deadly attacks on candidates.

According to the state attorney general’s statement, Sánchez Figueroa and her bodyguard were shot by individuals in a white van while walking from a gym to her house.

Both Sánchez Figueroa and her bodyguard succumbed to their injuries in the hospital. An investigation into the incident has been initiated.

Confirmation of Sánchez Figueroa’s death came hours after Claudia Sheinbaum won a decisive victory to become Mexico’s first female president.

This year has seen widespread violence against politicians, with numerous political candidates and applicants killed by criminal organizations during the campaign season in efforts to influence the vote.

The electoral violence marks the bloodiest in Mexico’s history.

Sheinbaum is set to assume the presidency on October 1, succeeding the outgoing President Andrés Manuel López Obrador, her longtime ally whose social welfare programs have lifted many Mexicans out of poverty.

Mexico continues to grapple with one of the world’s highest homicide rates and remains a perilous environment for women, with statistics indicating around 10 women are murdered daily. Moreover, over 100,000 people remain missing in the country.
