17-year-old Chinese badminton star Zhang Zhijie dies after collapsing during match

17-year-old Chinese badminton talent Zhang Zhijie tragically passed away after collapsing during a match. The Badminton World Federation (BWF) announced on Tuesday, July 2, that it will conduct a comprehensive investigation following Zhang’s death at the Asia Junior Championships in Yogyakarta, Indonesia.

Zhang collapsed on Sunday while playing, and despite swift hospitalization, he succumbed to cardiac arrest that same night. Concerns have surfaced regarding the timing of medical response at the venue, with footage indicating a delay of 40 seconds before assistance reached the court.

“We are undertaking a thorough review in collaboration with Badminton Asia and the Badminton Association of Indonesia (PBSI),” stated the BWF in a release.

A PBSI spokesperson attributed the delayed emergency response to adherence to BWF regulations by the referee. The BWF stressed its intention to assess the necessity of any guideline modifications following the investigation.

Additionally, the federation awaits an official report from Badminton Asia and the local organizing committee to evaluate the adherence to proper medical protocols during Zhang’s collapse.
